The new government of Korea has proposed a new energy policy vision and is preparing specific procedures to execute the plan. Because the new ‘Energy Transition Policy’ is much different from the past policies, a new strategic approach is required at the current phase.
In the past energy policy has traditionally emphasized stability in supply and demand and economic efficiency focused on nuclear and coalplant energy. However, President Moon’s administration is emphasizing more on stability and environmental friendliness, and focusing on changing the pre-existing energy sources to renewables and clean energy. They are also focusing on demand management and expanding dispersed generation. The ‘Energy Transition Policy’ was proposed in order to create a safe and clean environment protected from natural disasters as from the past incidents such as the Fukushima Tsunami or Kyoung-ju earthquake.
