Abstract

Under the changing global trade environment, Korea’s foreign trade structure concentrated on G2is highly needed to be changed. Recently, the New Southern Policy pursued by the new government embodies this necessity. For the efficient promotion of the New Southern Policy and the improvement of the foreign trade structure of Korea, it is necessary to expand economic cooperation to the countries which have not been emphasized. Myanmar and Laos in the Indochina Peninsula are very important in this respect. However, economic cooperation with these countries needs to be done in the long-term perspective rather than in the short term. In other words, we need economic cooperation in a way to support industrial development and economic development in Myanmar and Laos instead of expansion of our exports and trade surplus. When this kind of cooperation takes place, economic cooperation with Myanmar and Laos will benefit Korea in the long run, and it will be possible to improve the trade structure that we originally intended to pursue.
