Abstract

Implementation of the Ports Development and Environmental Improvement Project will benefit the city's economy and will contribute significantly to the improvement of living conditions of Pusan's citizens. The project will result in increased economic efficiency of timber processing industries and in the improvement of air purity and noise levels, while reducing Pusan city traffic congestion and risks due to road accidents. Negative impacts, however, are inevitable, but most of them are minor and/or can be minimized. The major impacts include: 1) changes of topography, coastline, land use, and sea bed due to dredging and sea reclamation, 2) partial loss of land and marine ecology due to land clearance and dredging, 3) degradation of water quality and marine ecology, including seaweeds and other marine life, 4) increase of air and noise pollution around the proposed site due to the use of heavy equipment and transportation during construction operations, and 5) increase in generation of wastewater and other wastes during construction and operation of the port and industrial complex. This assessment analyzes each of these impacts in detail and offers mitigation plans.
