There has been a structural change in term of population aging in Korea. There is also a growing concern that the urban environments in Korea need to be changed in order to improve the quality of citizen's life, especially healthy lives in city.
This study focuses on the current status and key issues for creating the health and longevity city in Korea. The main purpose of this study is to suggest some urgent tasks in order to construct a healthy & longevity city in Korea.
This study is composed of five chapters. Following introduction chapter, the second chapter has investigated the concept and necessity of creating the healthy & longevity city. It is examined that urban environment, especially built environment has something to do with health status and longevity. The reviews goes into the social determinants of health and the relationship between longevity and daily living conditions. It has reviewed similar concepts such as healthy city and elderly-friendly city. It suggests that a healthy&longevity city is characterized with not only urban planning and design that promotes healthy behaviors and safety, but also urban living condition that leads to active lives and healthy aging.
Chapter three has examined demographic change and prospects in cities. Cities are demographically aging at the fastest speed in the world, The Geographical difference between cities has also been revealed. Compared to large-sized cities, the medium and small sized cities are suffer from the population aging. Next, this study has analyzed health status of citizen and the aged especially utilizing the data of Korea national Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In terms of health status of the aged, there is also a difference between cities.
The nest chapter has researched domestic and overseas cases that are related to policy issues for creating a healthy & longevity city. Healthy city movement in Korea is firstly reviewed in relations to policy implications for creating a healthy & longevity city. The following case introduces an example of healthy and ecological corridor in new town development in Korea. The concept and components of healthy and ecological corridor may be applied to the healthy&longevity city development. The next case has focused a traditional mental map for ideal living conditions. Korean has long been concerned with health ana longevity in deciding village and house. The overseas case has first investigated the national program for healthy and cultural city development. Some local government policy measures are also introduced. The next case presents housing strategy and Health Impact Assessment(HIA) of Briton&Hove city in UK> the cit has put efforts on health promotion by way of housing strategy for differentiated group of citizens.
The last chapter summarizes the lessons learned from the previous chapters' and makes recommendations for creating a healthy&longevity city. It is first emphasized that the importance of built environment for citizens' health has to be recognized: the equality and efficiency of urban environment profoundly influences health and longevity. Secondly, it needs to integrate the agenda for health and longevity with that of urban development. It becomes important to link planning and health so that it has to take healthy urban planning practices forward on a large scale. Thirdly, it suggests that a customized initiatives for healthy&longevity city model in Korea is to be introduced. Lastly, there needs to research on the amendment of urban planning acts, urban development guidelines and urban regeneration systems.
