Abstract

After two years of operation, both expectations and concerns have been raised with the Korea Train Express (KTX) in the perspectives of national and regional planning. As found in Japanese and French cases, however, the effects of the high speed rail (HSR) can be observed over a long period, while they are differing depending on regions. Therefore, it is somewhat too early to analyze the effects of the HSR on the national spatial structure; however, this study is expected to have the effect of monitoring the beginning stage of the operation, and set up a basic database for future studies.
This study has been carried out as part of a two-year project. While the first-year study included on the changes in the regional transportation system, HSR user behaviors, and case study of the Daejeon station area, this second-year study focuses on the following three aspects of the HSR operation: the macro and micro analysis on the changes in the national spatial structure, the re-organization of the national spatial structure, and the development of a basic database for future studies.
