As Korea-USA(KORUS) FTA covers not only the goods(Chapter 2~5) but also the investment(Chapter 11), intellectual property rights(Chapter 18), cross-border trade in services(Chapter 12), it will have a substantial effect on Korean economy, including the healthcare industry. It is true that the healthcare sector has been perceived as a non-tradable sector, but its importance in the global market is growing. In particular, the pharmaceutical sector and the medical devices sector are one of the most globalized industries nowadays. Therefore, we can easily infer that free trade in those sectors will have effects on the healthcare industry and subsequently on the health of nation itself. We will need to investigate not only how the free trade will affect the healthcare industry but also how it will have an effect on the access to medicines, quality safety and efficacy of medicines, etc.
Although KORUS FTA has taken effect from March 2012, there are still debates over some issues in Korea. (The rest omitted)
