Continuous monitoring of land use change is an important issue to manage sustainable national territory. According to the need for an improved living environment and economic development, forest and agricultural land resource has been developed into other purposes of land use, such as residential, industrial or recreational land. The rapid transitions of land use have disturbed environment of national territory in the aspects of ecosystem and amenity. It has also given rise to deterioration of urban facilities, such as water supply, sewage, and school buildings etc. However, the impacts of the developments have not watched up carefully and continuously. It has brought various undesirable issues.
The fundamental goal of this study is to develop a land use monitoring method to reduce or eliminate the problems mentioned above. This research has two objectives: The first objective is to suggest a frame of land use monitoring system that generates adequate information for planning and policy-making for sustainable national territory. The second is to inventory the items that should be considered to develop such a kind of system. This can help implementation of the suggested method efficiently.
This study has eight chapters. Chapter I describes the background, the objectives and the flows of this study. Following the introductory material in Chapter I, Chapter II summarizes the current issues in land use management and previous researches. Chapter III places the research in its theoretical context, demonstrating its conceptual heritage and the significance of the research problem. Chapter IV is a theoretical investigation of land use monitoring system based on land use management domains (LMD).
The central aspect of this work is the development of the scheme of impact analysis caused by land use changes using LMD to facilitate the measurement of the impacts. Chapter V investigates the important factors that should be considered for constructing land use monitoring system and the procedures of the system development. Chapter VI shows an example of impact analysis for education environment about Osan study area, specifically caused by residential area development. Chapter VII introduces the techniques including GIS and remote sensing and database that can be used for the system. The generic system architecture is also proposed, which contains more detailed sub-systems such as database management, analytical means development, impact analysis, and voluntary civil participant support system. Finally, Chapter VIII gives the overall conclusions and suggestions for future studies of land use monitoring.
