Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between
inter-firm cooperation and innovation capability. We try to find the evidence
that inter-firm cooperation can contribute to enhance the industrial innovation
capabilities. In this study we categorize inter-firm cooperation into four types
in respect of innovation type and level. One type of cooperation to improve
productivity and strengthen patent and standardization are related to modular
innovation. The other type of cooperation to developing human resource and
product innovation are related to modular innovation. In this study we focus
on investigating the relationship between the types of inter-firm cooperation
and characteristics of innovation.
From the empirical analysis on Korean companies we find that there is a
positive relationship between inter-firm cooperation and industrial innovation
capability. When the company increases inter-firm cooperation activities, the
product and process innovation are increased. The possibility of process
innovation is relatively high in the inter-firm cooperation of lower innovation
capability group, while the possibility of product innovation is high in the
inter-firm cooperation of higher innovation capability group.
The main contents of this study are follows. Firstly, inter-firm
cooperation contributes both product innovation and process innovation.
Secondly, however, the types of inter-firm cooperation are different from company to company in respect of innovation level and characteristics.
Finally we draw policy implications to support inter-firm cooperation by
type and level of innovation in each group of firms. Government needs to
set up human resource development program to support first type of
company group(a low level innovation capability and an integral innovation).
Government needs a support to strengthen productivity for second type of
company group(a low level innovation capability and modular innovation).
Government needs a support to diversify business and strengthen product
innovation for third type of company group(a high level innovation
capability and an integral innovation). Finally Government needs a support
to promote a cooperation in patent and standardization for fourth type of
company group(a high level innovation capability and modular innovation).
