The purpose of this study was to develop the planning criteria for the urban street planning and design. The research focused on finding the following two planning indexes; one is the optimal road ratios according to the city sizes and functional criteria, another is the adequate intervals of the functional roadways.
The research found that these indexes should be developed with reflecting the urban characteristics such as city size, population density, development density, and traffic characteristics. The research also found that the required road ratio becomes higher as the bigger size of city and the lower function of roadway. Another finding was that the street intervals have close relationships with the size of traffic generation and populations density.
However, the development process was roughly performed with several supposed assumptions and engineering judgements. Thus, further study should be made to more systemically develop the optimal planning criteria based on more logical approach and screening process of the results.
