This study raises the issue of the fairness of science. There has been a general
awareness that science should contribute to build a more fair society, not to speak of
a more fat society. 'Fair Science' can be defined as one which is performed in more
fair way and contributes to build a more fair society. However, the concept of 'fair
society' is hard to define and harder to gain general agreement.
Instead, this study has paid attention to the norm of science. Many has agreed that
science is one of social practice and not alone with the society. Socialization and
commercialization of science have changed the norm of science from the conventional
one such as unversalism and communism to secretism and monopolism, which in turn
raises the danger of reinforcement of inequality.
We have summarized the change of the norm of science stirred by socialization and
commercialization as follows; the growing possibility of the conflicts of interests, the
impediment of the interchange of knowledge, and the destruction of the diversity of
We have observed this change of norm in the perception of scientists in Korea
through a survey research, and proposed policy implications for more fair science.
