In the national economy, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
represent the majority of the private sector and are often recognized as an
important channel for creating jobs. SMEs also play important roles as a
producer and user of innovations, fusing their energy into innovation activities
in the national innovation system.
Despite their quantitative growth, the Korean SMEs are now faced with such
limitationsas the lack of qualitative growth and the absence of global production
network. To overcome these limitations, attention is now being paid to the
"hidden champion"companies, which represents a shift in technology innovation
policy for SMEs.
In this background, through surveys and case studies, this study aims at
understanding the current status of the "Korean-style hidden champions" or
leading global SMEs in Korea, identifying the characteristics of innovation at
these companies, and presenting a new direction for technology innovationsystem
or policy for SMEs based on the identified characteristics.
In general, leading global SMEs tend to possess excellent innovation capabilities
despite their limited resources. For a successful innovation, leading global SMEs
try to understand the market and customer needs and leverage technology
expertise. In the innovation process of the SMEs, the active catalyst role played
by top management is extremely important. One of the key characteristics of
leading global SMEs is the intangible competitive edge. This means leading
global SMEs have developed differentiated corporate managementstrategy, by
effectively utilizing limited resources.
