For sustainable growth of Korea economy, new growth engines should be secured,
and this is why we develop basic science and technology. Science-based industry can
be defined as a industry where technology innovation is the key factor for growth,
whereas creation and diffusion of scientific knowledge are the driving force for it.
Representative areas of science-based industry are semiconductor, pharmaceuticals,
fine chemistry, advanced materials and software. The growth of science-based industry
depends highly on deploying the emerging technologies such as IT, BT, NT and
securing the basic science and technology of them. However, the status of
science-based industry of Korea does not rank high except semiconductor in spite of
steady increase of governmental investment in basic research and rapid increase of
number of SCI papers and patents.
This research aims to present the strategy for securing basic science and technology
to foster science-based industry. Two sectors, solar cell and high-tech medical
equipment, were investigated and compared to draw policy implications.
