Abstract

Since Chesbrough introduced the term “open innovation” in his book Open
Innovation: The New Imperative for Creating and Profiting from Technology
in 2003, this subject has got much attention from scholars, practitioners, and
policy makers and initiated many scholarly activities such as books, reports,
symposiums, conferences, and special issues of scholarly journals. But there
are some doubts whether open innovation is a really new method or paradigm
for corporate innovation process. We examine critically the newness of his
theory, to reach a conclusion that though the term “open innovation” is new,
the contents of it is not really new.
Probing into 12 cases of domestic and foreign firms, we have learned on
relations between open innovation strategy and surrounding contexts the firm
faced. Among 4 categories of contexts - corporate specific, industry specific,
country specific, and common to all - industry elements were most influential
and decisive on the motives, practices, and managerial issues of open
innovation activities of the firms. We analysed the differences of open
innovation patterns of several industries and summed up some salient points.
On the basis of these analyses, we derived some theoretical, managerial and
policy implications.
