Abstract

The development of knowledge-based economy is fundamentally based on
creative technological innovation, while that of industrial economy has been led
by input of labor and capital. To accomplish knowledge-based economy, it needs
to search for new driving force of industry develop. Nanotechnology is one of
the promising emerging technologies, such as information communication
technology, biotechnology and environmental technology. The commercial value
of nanotechnology can be amplified by fusion with other technologies, as it has
a great effect on the whole industry by synthesizing and controlling of materials
and devices by atomic or molecular scale. Nanotechnology can play a important
role in establishing the foundation of knowledge-based economy by providing a
physical base and improving efficiency of it. That is why many countries have
made governmental strategies and infrastructures to support researchers and
companies related.
From the viewpoint of the supply value chain system, nanotechnology can be
utilized by various producers in every steps of materials, components and
modules. This report covers the characteristics of technological innovation in the
industrial goods producers utilizing nanotechnology in Korea. To elucidiate the
characteristics, input of innovation resource, innovation activity of firm and
innovation output were respectively investigated by analysis of investment of
governmental R&D projects, representative examples of producers and patents
applied to the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
A few important results were derived after investigation and analysis. The
investment in nanotechnology in Korea has been led by government, and
allocated mainly to public sectors and medium-small companies. It means that
the industrialization of nanotechnology is still at initial stage in Korea. Several
cases of producers and products related to nanotechnology could be categorized
respectively into the new architecture creation type, the component-equipment
development type and the new material synthesis type, The characteristics of
each type were reported from the viewpoint of effect on industry, scale of
resource input, demanding level of technology and entry barrier of market. An
active investment by government made a positive effect on application of
patents. The number of applied patents related to nanotechnology rapidly
increased since the year of 2,000. The patents applied by companies were
focused on manufacturing of materials and devices in semiconductors and
display. However, application of patents by public sectors and medium-small
companies was not active compared with large companies.
In conclusion, this report suggests several policy implications to promote the
industrialization of nanotechnology. Firstly, government should select and focus
on searching for the definite items. Secondly, the private investment by venture
capitals and large materials companies should be activated to strengthen the
technological innovation capability of the industries related. Thirdly, the practical
cooperations among innovation actors should be emphasized. Fourthly, it is
important to build the governmental supporting systems considering the types of
industrialization. Lastly, promoting the applications of patents by public sectors
and medium-small companies is needed to secure intellectual property rights as
results of technological innovation.
