On his New Year tour of Chungcheongbuk-do, President Park Chung-hee paid a surprise visit to the Boun Agricultural High School where he encouraged 4H rural youths and toured the school’s facilities. Designated as an exemplary agricultural high school by Chungcheongbuk-do, the school operates a repair center for agricultural machinery, an agriculture consultation center and testing beds in order to promote industry-school cooperation in the field of agriculture. Since 1975, the school has conducted education for students at other agricultural high schools.
President Park visited the machine practice class at Chungnam Technical High School in Daejon on his way to Chungcheongnam-do. He encouraged the efforts of the students and teachers who often stay late for classes and expressed the importance of going to college, noting that the Fourth Five-Year Economic Development Plan, which includes the high-tech industry, should be implemented without delay. The sixth general congress of the Korea/Japan Parliamentarians Union was held in Tokyo, Japan. At the congress, parliamentary members of the two nations agreed that security and peace on the Korean peninsula and in Japan are inextricably linked, and that the issue of reducing U.S. ground forces in Korea should be addressed cautiously. The Saemaeul (New Village) Project’s rally of private organizations nationwide was held in Seoul this year. 1,500 Saemaeul workforce leaders pledged to continue their efforts to build a sound society by placing more of an emphasis on community than on individual interest. Saemaeul leaders in Seoul visited the 2587th Army unit in a suburb of Seoul in order to support the soldiers and give them gifts as symbols of appreciation for their service.
An evening event to console the families of overseas workers was held in Seoul. The family members of workers stationed overseas, including in the Middle East, attended and enjoyed the event, which was hosted by Hyundai Engineering and Construction. Dozens of Korean construction companies have sent their employees to the Middle East, a move that has enhanced our national image and increased our foreign currency earnings.
This is Ulleung-do Island covered with heavy snow. This winter, inland regions including Seoul had less snow than usual, resulting in a winter drought. However, this small island located in the East Sea has had too much snow, the most it has seen in several decades. Despite the heavy snow, Ulleung-do residents are united under the spirit of the Saemaeul (New Village) Project and continue their efforts to build an advancement base for the fishing industry.
The skiing competition of the 58th National Sports Festival was held in Jinburyeong. Ahn Mun-gi from Gyeonggi-do swept two championships in the men’s Nordic competition, and Choi Young-hee of the girls’ high school category also won two gold medals.
