Abstract

To resolve the issue of mismatch for science and engineering graduates, it is required to understand their transition process from school to the labor market. For this purpose, this paper analyzes the school-to-work transition of graduates of colleges and universities by major to see how well the match between the job and the field of study is and how long it takes for the graduates to get full-time regular jobs. The results show that it takes less time for engineering majors to find jobs than other majors, implying engineering majors’ transition to labor market is relatively smooth. However, science graduates of two-year college show higher level of mismatch and longer job seeking periods. Therefore, this analysis renders the importance of developing measures which effectively incorporate gaps created by their major and educational level to mitigate the frictional cost that science and engineering graduates pay in their transition process.
