Abstract

On the basis of multi-cohorts survey data on college graduates collected by the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training, the current paper investigates long-term earnings consequences of choosing a particular field at the college level. Special attention is given to the conventional belief that there exists economic disincentive for high school graduates to avoid the science and engineering fields relative to liberal arts and social science. Unlike existing studies, our analysis is based on longitudinal information on wages and employment college graduates actually experience over the course of work career, which enables us to compare long-term benefits and costs associated with a field choice across different fields, in terms of initial wages, wage growth, probability of acquiring a career job as well as the waiting time until the career job. Results generally do not accord with the conventional wisdom.
