Abstract

This study analyses the extant results of consumer awareness surveys on food safety, and aims to present regular survey systems to enhance efficacy of future food safety policies.
Recent food safety incidents in Korea are intensifying public fear and insecurity over food safety. Korean citizens’ food safety satisfaction level is relatively lower than those living in technologically advanced countries, and a proper survey system that can allow time series analysis on this issue does not exist. Moreover, food safety management authority is divided among multiple ministries, causing significant inefficiencies in terms of public awareness surveys and overall information usage.
In order to improve the general public’s satisfaction regarding food safety, citizens’ sentiment should be reflected in policy, instead of arguing against harmful effects of unsafe food based on scientific evidence. As is in the case in the UK, a food panel as well as a formal survey system should be established and government investment should support this endeavor.
