Abstract

This study explores the supply and demand policy for commodities, which was the most important means for economic stabilization between 1945 and 1950 in South Korea. The United States occupation forces did not initiate any long- range socio-economic reforms or economic stabilization policy until the Joint Commission adjourned on May 8, 1946. The U.S. Military Government authorities in South Korea aimed to provide urgently needed relief and prevent a rise in disease and unrest. That is why the United States authorities imagined that their involvement in South Korea would be short, based on the mistaken belief that unification would be speedily achieved. Because of this situation, prices jumped. This was caused by the shrinking of production, due to the severance from the Japanese economic block and the division of this country at the 38th parallel, and the lack of order in the distribution structure. Therefore, it was a matter of urgency to supply people consumer goods and food, in order to make Korean society stable. (The rest is omitted)
