Abstract

With the expansion of digital technologies including the internet, the e-business industry has grown. E-business was adopted as a survival strategies in the health and medical services sector. This study seeks plans to prepare strategies to reinforce industry management and competitiveness of the health and medical services organizations, and to support effective policy.

E-business in the digital economy is aimed at improving relationships with clients in an online environment, and to save costs by rationalizing business processes between partners. In the health and medical services sector, the importance of the relationship between value and supply chain, and e-commerce has been constantly increasing. Use of the internet would transform the industry by creating new client channels, enabling e-commerce, and facilitating supply chains.

Consumers interested in the internet are expected increase as the expansion of the scope of online health and medical services, which provide advertisement and information, allow consumers to select staff, institutions, and services, and provide consultation. Already, there are reports on savings on the cost of purchasing medical supplies and patients’ costs through e-commerce. In addition, the level of utilizing information technology (IT) in medical devices has increased, and the medical and pharmaceutical goods industry are soon to follow. The general hospitals in Korea utilize websites as their primary means of promotion.

In the future, client-focused information should be reinforced for innovation in the information systems of e-business. The current status of e-businesses in the medical services industry shows that e-business professionals are insufficient, and the rate of implementing e-commerce is significantly lower than other industries. Change is necessary to develop specialized professional experts, and to make changes in public perception.

In order to stimulate e-business in the health and medical services sector, a strategy should be established to integrate the government’s efforts to expand e-business, as well as partnership with overseas companies. Furthermore, it is necessary to expand qualitative investments related to developing and educating IT professionals, prepare support for small- and medium-sized enterprises, establish business strategies and models to realize e-business, and continue the policy basis for the IT industry and e-business.
