Abstract

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has been targeted to protect the environment and has become a necessity and importance. Electric vehicle(EV) is considered a new sustainable alternative to replace the conventional internal combustion engine cars that use fossil fuels. But the electric vehicle still does not attract the attention of the consumers in reality because its purchasing price is higher, and it has a short driving distance and relatively low maximum speed.
The development of EV and commercialization efforts have been continued to cope with the strengthened international environmental and safety regulations. The government has taken active actions to preempt the future automotive market respond quickly to changing technological paradigm. The government has proposed several strategies for promoting EV to respond and prepare the growing market of environmentally friendly vehicles. One of them is a strategy of purchasing subsidies to encourage the sale of EVs.
In Korea, there are already EVs in the market and consumers can choose EV , hybrid and gasoline-powered vehicles. Compared to other vehicle types, EV is not a good condition to compete them because the charging infrastructure is not widely installed. In addition, the price of electric vehicles is over twice as high as the price of gasoline vehicles. In perspective of operating fuel cost, EV has advantage to other types of vehicles because its driving cost per kilometer is cheaper. In the public sector, the financial support is available when buying a new EV, it is not available for an individual to buy EV with subsidy. In the future, due to the lack of finances, the financial support of the private sector seems to be difficult to expect. Therefore, the strategy is needed to overcome this conditions.
