Bike sharing has been introduced to increase bicycle usage. Nowadays, over 300 cities in the world operate bike sharing policies, and the number of cities that have adopted bike sharing has increased. Changwon, Goyang and Daejeon adopted bike sharing and they are followed by many other cities.
Although sharing is used well by bicycle users, the sustainability of the sharing policy is questionable. Insufficient bicycle infrastructure, a negative perception of bicycles, and a great amount of introduction and operation costs hinder us from adopting the sharing policy. In particular, financial instability is the biggest hurdle in implementing the bike sharing policy. This is because the local governments have the burden of financing all the cost necessary for the sharing policy as bicycle policies are under their authority.
Against this backdrop, this study reviewed current situations and business models of bike-sharing in Korea as well as other nations. Then, we conducted surveys on public bike usage patterns, improvement strategies, and economic benefits in Changwon and Goyang where public bikes are the most popular. Lastly, bike-sharing improvement strategies were suggested. (The rest omitted)
