Abstract

Spatial structure of national land can be defined as areas of influence of transport infrastructure hubs. The spatial structure is determined by population and industries within the areas as well as transport networks connecting them. The areas of influence can be divided into metropolitan areas, mega regions and supermega regions. Korea’s spatial plans have so far been devised under the “land development framework first, transport infrastructure later” policy. Even the national land framework currently being developed does not give due consideration to the importance of transit areas of influence. These conditions have led to population, industrial arrangement, everyday life and economic and industrial activities becoming separated from transport systems actually used by the public, causing inconvenience to people’s daily life and increasing social costs.
