Abstract

South Korea’s government expenditure on energy-related R&I has increased significantly in the past decade. Spending on energy-related R&I was approximately KRW 600 billion in 2010 compared to KRW 53 billion in 2000. The Green Growth strongly advocated by the previous government has helped energy-related issues, including R&I to be nurtured as the country’s growth engine, to gain more attention and funding. National Energy Technology Development Plan (NETDP), which the National Science & Technology Council (NSTC) publishes, is an over-arching document in implementing national energy-related R&I in South Korea. There are also three Technology Roadmaps (hereafter, TRM) which helps identifying focus areas for research and innovation programs. They are revised every two years with the latest one announced in 2011. Those TRMs are basically follows NETDP but contain more detailed and specific plan and R&I subjects for each technology.
