Abstract

Among East Asian countries, South Korea has exerienced the most significant modification to and extension of its state welfare system in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. Naturally, there have been various attempts to examine and assess the nature of these changes, and also to predict the future direction of South Korean welfare state. One group of academics deemed these changes to be a meaningful sign of advancement towards a more western stle of welfare state, whilst another group saw them as very limited. (The rest omitted)
