Abstract

The present study investigates the potential economic impacts of India-Korea CEPA using partial and general equilibrium analysis. This study more specifically looked at consumer surplus, trade creation and diversion results as well as the impact on tariff revenues. The study indicates positive effect of CEPA on consumer surplus, trade and investment flows, and negative effect on tariff revenues. The study recommends diversifying the tax base and developing alternative less distortionary revenue generating strategy to compensate the tariff revenue loss. The study further suggests strengthening the national capacity to limit rent capturing capacity of importers and exporters so that the consumers can draw the benefits of CEPA. Overall CGE based assessment of FTA in goods is not encouraging for India as the welfare is expected to decline. (The rest omitted)
