Abstract

In recent years, there has been growing academic and public interest in the Saemaeul Movement. In particular, the Saemaeul Movement has been established as a national policy agenda of the Geun-Hye Park administration. While this may have resulted from changes in the political environment, the government also believes that the promotion of a second national movement similar to the Saemaeul Movement is required to address crime, corruption, and social conflict currently prevalent in Korea. The Saemaeul Movement began in 1970 under the leadership of President Jeong-Hee Park. More than anything, this movement was a practical "movement to live well," a movement based on diligence, self-help, and cooperation in overcoming absolute poverty. In general, this national movement has been assessed as a successful one. At the same time, the country is currently carrying out the Village Community Project, and most local governments are implementing related policies. (The rest omitted)
