Abstract

The population in Korea is rapidly aging. In 2000, senior Koreans whose age was 65 or older accounted for 7.2% of the total population . Their percentage is expected to rise to 14% in 2019 and to 20% in 2026. The changing balance between age groups of the population will affect Koreans' ways of living, posing serious challenges to the nation's economy and society. The main purpose of this study is to contribute to formulating welfare science and technology policy preparing Korea for the rapid population aging. In order to draw policy implications for Korea to overcome challenges ahead, the study reviews science and technology policies on population aging in some advanced countries such as the EU, UK, U.S. and Jap an which have experienced population aging earlier than Korea.
