Abstract

In this study, we try to provide answers for the following three questions: (1) whether economic development (as proxied by GDP per capita) is a significant determinant of environmental sustainability, (2) whether this interaction shows different characteristics at different stages of the economic development; in particular, whether the ESI-GDP interaction in Korea is different from those of the other developing countries and developed countries, and (3) whether trade liberalization leads to higher environmental sustainability.
