Abstract

Recently, Korea’s M&A market has experienced a steep growth. As of November 2015, the market’s deal value hit a record high of KRW 76.8 trillion. The growth has been driven by mega deals by Korea’s large corporations, seeking to reshuffle their business and organization structures in response to a slowing growth of their core businesses. However, the fruits of the M&A market’s rapid growth has not been shared equally. The role of financial advisory of mega deals has been dominated by foreign investment banks, while Korea’s securities companies have been mostly left out. For a healthy and balanced growth of Korea’s M&A market going forward, there is an urgent need for Korea’s securities companies to strengthen their financial advisory capabilities.
