Abstract

A joint consulting project has been carried out together by the Korean Capital Market Institute and the Asia Development Bank, since August 2013. The project is to strengthen support for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Financial Regulators Training Initiative (APEC FRTI), especially by sharing Korea’s financial developments and experiences with countries taking part in APEC FRTI. The joint project has held five seminars in five Asia-Pacific countries which are China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Fiji, and Cambodia. The seminars had 258 attendees from 21 countries in total who are financial regulators and supervisors in their own countries. During the seminars, I have learned that the Asia-Pacific countries are strongly hoping to nurture their capital markets and thus take a new leap forward to support their economic growth while they have recognized that the role of traditional banking has been reduced and narrowed to back up economic growth.
