Abstract

South Korea and her major trading countries (i.e., China, the USA, and Japan) are now suffering from an economic recession, which can be overcome by further expanding trade volumes among these four countries. For this purpose, this paper will analyze how comparative advantage of these four countries in 35 industries of the manufacturing sector changed over time for the period of 1999- 2009. It was found that export products of China are the most concentrated for the period of 1999-2009. This concentration of Chinese export products is followed by Japan, South Korea, and the USA in that order. Since this kind of high concentration of export products is not desirable, it should be diversified to avoid any potential economic loss associated with unfavorable trade environmental changes against these concentrated export products.
