Abstract

In the era of globalization, ‘region’ has become an important unit which drives the economic development of a nation. In this context, the South Korean government has pushed ahead with regional innovation policies. The regional innovation system, being located in sub-national regions, is an important vehicle for regional economic development. But it can also be a major instrument for national economic development. The Korean government has put forth its regional innovation system policy as a part of national economic development strategy as much as regional development indeed. Ulsan, among other cities where regional innovation system programs were initiated, houses a relatively matured system of regional innovation focusing on automotive technology. The city has steadily been in growth ever since former president Park Chung-hee set up the 5- year economic development plan and designated it as one of the industrial centers. (The rest omitted)
