Abstract

The power of local self-government is very venerable to the nation-state powers. Local autonomy once established by the events of democratic movements, as Alex Tocqueville once asserted, tends to be eroded by the mighty central authorities. To counteract such trends we need fully to aware the sprit of local self-government advocated by the political philosophers. However, the sprit or thoughts on the local autonomy has received little attention by the scholars. This paper traces some of the best known philosophers in local self-government. They are; J. Althusius who is the father of federalism and subsidiarity, T. Jefferson who laid foundation of decentralized government in America as a founding father, A. Tocqueville who found the success of American democracy in local self-governments in New England, and J.T. Smith who advocated the freedom local government from the central government.
