Abstract

The absolute gap between skilled and unskilled wages has increased over the years in Korea though the relative gap has fallen. In this paper we consider two possible explanations of this pattern in wages: international trade and technology. We apply the price approach to determine the mandated effect of these factors on wages under the assumption of perfect competition. We find that international trade mandated a statistically insignificant change in wages in Korea. However there has been a statistically significant though relatively minor change in wages mandated by technology.
