Abstract

Korea has Bioethics and Safety Act for human embryonic stem cell research. For adult stem cell research, however, we have to refer several Korean acts and regulations. This paper explains the Korean governance system for embryonic and adult stem cell research, including laboratory research and clinical translation. Furthermore, it introduces some legal and ethical issues relevant to this governance system and some regulations such as blanket consent for embryonic stem cell research, the use of oocytes and its restriction for SCNT embryonic research, the application of registration system to imported embryonic stem cell lines, and the meaning of the use of stem cell lines. For this work, the paper deals with 1) the scope and restrictions of embryonic stem cell research, 2) review system and government’s oversight, 3) regulations on the distribution and utilization of embryonic stem cell lines, which are legally required to be registered to the Minister of Health and Welfare, (The rest omitted)
