Efforts should be made to develop agriculture into a new growth engine, in order to tackle stagnant agricultural growth in Korea and make sure continuous growth and development of the Korean economy. This research looks at the concept and role of agricultural R&D from a broad perspective, thereby deepening understanding of how agriculture can be turned into a new growth engine in a comprehensive context and suggesting alternatives. At the outset, a dumb bell-shaped structure was suggested in this research in order to help conceptual understanding of agricultural R&D. At the center of the structure are food, horticulture, stockbreeding and basic agricultural research. One end of the dumb bell is practical agricultural research on the agricultural industry and community. The other end is agricultural bioengineering research based on state-of-the-art technologies. These three parts are organically connected each other. (The rest omitted)
