Abstract

Although it has only been three decades since the introduction of the National Health Insurance System in Korea, and two decades have passed since the institution was extended to include all Korean citizens. Korea has achieved notable growth in this field within a short time period, the degree to which has elicited admiration from many other countries around the globe. The National Health Insurance System of Korea has been esteemed by the international community as one of the most efficient systems at providing universal health security for all of its citizens at a low cost. Korea, however, underwent a process of much trial and error before its National Health Insurance System developed into the successful institution it is today. Moreover, although the health insurance offered in Korea is evaluated as a success, from our current perspective, there are also many unsatisfactory aspects which require improvements.
