Collaborative research project on new rural development in Vietnam in comparison with Korea's Saemaul Undong

This report aims to present the results of a research project jointly conducted by Yeungnam University in the Republic of Korea and Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and provides the results of said research on Vietnam’s rural development programs. This research project was operated as part of the project for capacity building of Vietnam’s future leaders and was sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency. The purpose of this research is to develop measures for improving Vietnam’s National Target Program on New Rural Development (NTP-NRD) based on the experiences and lessons learned in Korea from Saemaul Undong, which was a highly successful rural development program. Korea operated the policy program for rural community development in the 1970s as initiated by President Park Chung Hee. As a result, the extreme poverty, which was rampant in rural areas, was eradicated; farm household income increased significantly; and breakthroughs were achieved in the development of rural agricultural economies.
